Kajabi can encode and display many common video formats (see the list below), but for the most consistent performance, we recommend uploading files in the MP4 format.

For best performance, we recommend you aim to have your videos fall within these guidelines:
  • Resolution: between 640px and 3840px (4K) wide
  • Bitrate: 5,000 - 10,000 kbps
  • Aspect ratio: 16:9 (i.e., 1080px x 1920px)
We recommend adhering to 1080p and 5,000 - 10,000 kbps as the max settings for upload, as it will reduce the likeliness of upload errors.

Audio quality after processing

Kajabi encodes and streams video via Wistia. After you upload a video, Wistia’s background processing may take 15–30 minutes to complete — during this time, previews may not reflect the final quality. If your audio sounds muffled or distorted after processing completes (not during the initial preview), the most common cause is audio bitrate. We recommend:
  • Audio codec: AAC
  • Bitrate: 128–160 kbps
  • Channels: Stereo
Audio exported at higher bitrates (e.g. 320 kbps) can degrade after Wistia transcoding. Re-encoding at the recommended settings and re-uploading typically resolves this.
Note: The maximum file size for video uploads is 4GB. If your video file size is larger than 4GB use a video file compression tool such as Handbrake. Kajabi does not limit your streaming bandwidth.

Troubleshooting upload errors

Upload fails with “unable to process”

If your video meets the format and size requirements but returns an “unable to process” error, try these steps in order:
  1. Re-encode with Handbrake using the Web Optimized (Fast Start) setting — this is the most common fix for transcoding errors.
  2. Try a different upload method — if you’re uploading from a URL or cloud link, try uploading the file directly from your device instead.
  3. Test in a different browser — Chrome is recommended. Avoid uploading over VPN.

Video won’t play after upload

If your video processes successfully but won’t play in the course player:
  1. Wait 15–30 minutes after upload — Wistia’s background encoding must complete before playback is reliable.
  2. Test in incognito mode in Chrome or Firefox to rule out browser cache.
  3. Check if the issue affects all students or specific ones — note their email addresses.
  4. Check that the lesson is Published and the student’s offer access is active.
